The rst settlements in the Congleton area were in Neolithic times, and archaeological nds tell us people lived here in both the Stone and Bronze Ages. Recent archaeological nds now suggest that Roman culture had some inuence on the lives of the local inhabitants. The Vikings made their mark by destroying nearby Davenport which allowed Congleton to become the local market town.In Saxon days Earl Godwin of Wessex held the town, but by the time of the Domesday Book of 1086, William the Conqueror had made his nephew The Earl of Chester and granted him the whole of Cheshire. He in turn passed ‘Cogletone’, which had been laid waste by the King’s army, to his man Bigot. In the 13th century, Congleton was part of the Barony of Halton, which belonged to the de Lacy family. It was Henry de Lacy, who granted Congleton’s rst charter in 1272. This made the town a free borough with the right to elect a mayor and ale taster, have a merchant guild and behead known felons. The people were allowed to travel throughout Cheshire without paying tolls, dig turves, keep pigs and get their corn ground at the town mill ‘on payment of the twentieth grain”. This provided the Corporation with its main income.Disaster struck Congleton in 1451 when the River Dane ooded and destroyed the wooden bridge, the town mill and half the timber-framed buildings. The town centre was rebuilt on higher ground, where the High Street is, and the river was straightened and diverted away from the town.Congleton was ravaged by the plague. In 1641 it was believed that the plague reached the town in a box of clothes sent from London. The town became deserted and poor – but was still expected to provide for bands of both Royalist and Commonwealth soldiers as the Civil War began. The townsfolk’s loyalties were divided. A former Congleton Mayor and lawyer, John Bradshaw, was president of the court which sent Charles I to be beheaded in 1649, and his signature as Lord President 8HISTORIC CONGLETON

DID YOU KNOW?John Bradshaw the President of the Council which tried and ordered the execution of Charles I was Mayor of Congleton in 1637 and lived in this house, which once stood on Lawton Street. The Bridestones is a Neolithic chambered tomb on the outskirts of Congleton. The chamber was originally covered by a massive stone cairn, which has long since disappeared.Congleton was also well known for its cockghts and bearbaiting. When the town bear died just before the annual wakes fair, the town used money it had been saving to buy a new bible, to buy a new bear instead.Elizabeth was dubbed ‘the brains of the suragist movement’ by Emmeline Pankhurst. She is listed on the Millicent Fawcett statue in Parliament Square, London. Congleton has embraced this remarkable woman by naming the new link road after her (Wolstenholme Elmy Way) and installing a life-size statue in the town centre.Find out more about Elizabeth’s story, by visiting: elizabethelmy.com or Facebook.com/elizabethsgroupELIZABETH WOLSTENHOLME ELMY (1833-1918) was the rst on the King’s death warrant. There is a plaque commemorating him on Bradshaw House in Lawton Street.Congleton became prosperous again, with much of its wealth derived from leather working and lace making. Congleton “points” were leather strips with a silver tip, similar to modern shoelaces, which were used for fastening clothes. Many Tudor buildings are still evident today. The rst silk mill in Congleton, built by John Clayton in 1752, was at the time one of the largest textile mills in the country. By 1771 this industry had restored the town’s prosperity.Ribbon weaving began in the 1750s and cotton spinning in 1784. By the end of the 18th century, there were numerous textile mills in the town, and better communications were needed. Turnpike Trusts improved the state of the roads, the Maccleseld Canal was opened in 1831 and in 1848 the railway arrived. In 1860 a treaty with France allowed French silk to be imported duty-free. The English silk trade began to decline and Congleton suered. Its fortunes were revived when fustian and velvet cutting were introduced in 1867, and dierent aspects of the textile trade continued to be important through the twentieth century. Congleton’s ribbons and tapes are particularly well known.More information about the history of Congleton can be found in the excellent Congleton Museum which is located behind the Town Hall in Market Square.9

Congleton has had amazing success in regional and national RHS In Bloom competitions scooping 20 gold medals.Congleton is an attractive town with a strong community focus. At the last census, the population of the town was 28,482 living in 12,839 households. There is a great deal of housebuilding in the parishes immediately adjacent to Congleton, which means the combined population of the area is likely to be closer to 40,000 by 2030. The challenge is to maintain the community town feel, develop the services that everyone will need and continue the sense of community pride in our town.Congleton is nestled at the foothills of the Pennines, oering some of the most beautiful countryside in Britain. With its good schools, excellent transport, busy events calendar, a wealth of social, sporting, cultural and community groups and reasonably priced houses (compared to much of Cheshire), Congleton remains a popular place to live, work and visit. The town has breweries, a theatre, a museum, a non-A&E hospital, two golf courses, a country park, a formal park, paddling pool, over 200 shops and 40 plus pubs. Some of the UKs top tourist attractions Visitors can also not help but notice a strong link with bears! There are bears on the roundabout, wooden bears in the park and at Buglawton, Beartown Brewery, numerous Beartown businesses even our Rugby and Football Teams are nicknamed ‘The Bears’. According to the legend, Congleton got its nickname from an incident in the 1660s when the town bear died just before the Wakes holiday and the town ‘sold its Bible to buy a bear’. According to the records the Town Corporation lent the Bearward (Bear keeper) 16 shillings from the town chest (containing money to buy a new Town Bible) to buy a new bear. The incident gave rise to the tale ‘Congleton rare, Congleton rare, sold the bible to buy a bear’. In recent years, the Beartown nickname has seen a revival and has been used to help market the town.WHY BEARTOWN?10CONGLETON TODAY & BEARTOWN

Walking around Congleton you can still see many glimpses of our past. Many of the historic buildings have been repurposed to meet today’s needs. Unfortunately, many of the grand homes and halls of the area have been lost over time to make way for housing estates and new buildings. The town still has 133 listed buildings. These buildings include: BRADSHAW HOUSEBradshaw House in Lawton Street replaced an earlier timber-framed house which was reputed to be the Congleton home of John Bradshaw, the former Congleton Mayor who went on to preside over the court that sentenced King Charles I to death and became the rst Lord President of the Council of the State of the English Commonwealth. The building has stood empty for many years. CONGLETON TOWN HALL Congleton Town Hall was opened in 1866 and designed by Edwin Godwin. It is probably the third building to be erected on this site, which has been the centre of the town’s government since 1272. The Town Hall is currently owned and managed by Congleton Town Council, which has spent almost £750,000 renovating this important building for Congleton.THE LION AND SWAN The Lion and Swan Hotel on Swan Bank – parts of this hotel date back to the 16th Century and it is known that there has been a Licensed Inn, Alehouse or Travellers Resting Place at this site since at least 1496. Between 1614 and 1633 it was a venue for plays presented by that group of travelling players, associated with William Shakespeare and Richard Burbage, called the ‘King’s Men’. Their fee being the princely sum of 10 shillings. LITTLE STREET SHOPS This area dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries; the buildings were originally cottages. WEST HOUSE Built by John Clayton in 1753, this house was occupied until 1881 by successive owners of Congleton’s largest industrial enterprise, the ‘Old Silk Mill’. It was the childhood home of James Pattison, who was Governor of the Bank of England from 1834 to 1837 and Member of Parliament for the City of London 1835-41 and 1843-49. His uncle was James, Chairman of the East India Company in 1818 and 1822. A 20th-century occupant, William Tavernor, was at the centre of a national nancial scandal involving the National Old Age Pensions Society. During World War I the house became a re-settlement centre for Belgian refugees.YE OLDE KINGS ARMS Although Ye Olde Kings Arms is thought to be the oldest pub in Congleton dating back to 1585, some of its beams are said to come from 600-year-old galleons, its foundations are much older. If you look carefully at the stone plinth on which the beams rest you will see the remains of a partially covered door and window.OVERTON HOUSEAn elegant three-storied Queen Anne-style townhouse dating from the beginning of the 18th century was reputed to have been built by a retired East Indian merchant, Edward Mallabar. The quality of its design suggests it was the work of an architect of some repute, possibly a member of the Adam family. In the late 19th century, a girls’ school occupied the house before it became the home of one of the town’s medical practices.WEAVERS COTTAGESModern redevelopment has swept away much of Congleton’s industrial heritage, but isolated examples still remain like the group of early 18th century ‘weavers cottages’ situated on Mill Street near the Mill Bridge. This group of four three storey cottages are an example of early industrial buildings. The ground and rst oors provided the living accommodation, the top oor with its larger windows to give increased light would have been used by handloom weavers. This oor was often accessed by an external staircase, making it ideal for housing fustian cutting frames when the industry came to Congleton in the 1860s. Other examples for weaver cottages can be found on Rood Hill and Waggs Road.16HISTORIC BUILDINGS

CONGLETON BATH HOUSE Congleton Bath House was built around 1820 and contains a cold-water plunge pool. It is set in its own grounds with a Robert Adams-style garden shelter. The Congleton Bath House Preservation Trust has restored the Bath House and created a Physic Garden in the grounds using plants that have played an important part in local medicine and industry.DAVENPORTSDavenports, now a menswear clothes shop on the High Street, was built using reclaimed ship timbers around 1432-1480. You can see many of the original timbers and wooden pegs inside the shop. The building was once the Kings Arms Public House. In 1622 Dr Dean, an apothecary, bequeathed the income from this and the adjacent shop to the Corporation for the benet of the town’s poor. This explains why the old town badge and the symbol of Hippocrates are included in the external woodwork.MOODY HALL Built in 1771, and once the home of industrialist Robert Hodgson and his wife Mildred, who was a second cousin of George Washington, has links with the founding of the United States of America and the Royal Family. By marrying the 13 Earl of Strathmore, their granddaughter became the great-grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II. It was here, in 1867, that Elizabeth Wolstenholme Elmy, an advocate of female education and later a prominent gure in the suragist movement opened her school for young ladies. ST PETER’S CHURCHSt Peter’s Church – is the Town Centre Parish church. The present building dates from 1740. It is one of the best examples of a Georgian interior in the Country. During the summer months the church is usually open every Tuesday from 10am-2pm, oering a quiet place to go and cool down, reect and explore local history. HOMEFIELD This elegant Georgian town house once the home of Reade family has links with Napoleon’s exile on St Helena. In the garden there was once a willow tree said to be from a cutting from one of the trees which surrounded Napoleon’s grave on the island. It was planted to commemorate the house’s ownership by Sir Thomas Reade who, as Lieutenant Governor of the island, was one of Napoleon’s guardians during his exile. 20, 22, 24, HIGH STREET - WHITTAKER AND BIGGS, HAIRDRESSER’S AND MORTGAGE CORNERThese three businesses once formed a larger medieval ‘open hall’ house dating from the 1450s. The timber frame structure is still visible in Whittaker and Biggs, which still has the original huge cooking replace and in the hairdressers where there are the remains of wall paintings. If you look through the gated passage into Black Lion Court you can see the overhang or jetty of the rst oor of what was the west wing of this impressive building. THE WHITE LION The White Lion public house on Congleton High Street probably dates back to the late 1500s or early 1600s when it was a large house. It is thought that John Bradshaw learnt his profession as a lawyer here. OLD MILLCongleton ‘Old Mill’ is one of the town’s lost buildings. This magnicent silk mill constructed between 1752 and 1755 became the impetus to Congleton becoming one of the area’s earliest mill towns. It was 240 feet long, 24 feet wide and 48 feet high and had 390 windows making it one of the largest textile mills in the country at the time of its construction. Like all mills of the period, it was powered by a water wheel 5½ in width and 19½ feet in diameter constructed by James Brindley, the renowned canal engineer. Although much reduced in size the mill continued in operation until 1998.17

Congleton is a welcoming town, with an exceptional location set in some of the most scenic countryside around! For visitors and residents, there is a wealth of natural and man-made attractions right on the doorstep ready to be explored!ASTBURY MERE COUNTRY PARKThanks to the hard work of a local trust the former sand quarry has been transformed into a beautiful Country Park, which attracts almost 300,000 visitors a year! The 14 hectare site includes a 3km all-weather path around the Mere, open space, extensive woodlands and wildower meadow. The Trust needs to raise considerable funds to maintain this beautiful ‘free’ attraction – so please leave some coins in the donation boxes dotted around the site. For the more active, Astbury Mere is the site of a national Park Run every Saturday morning at 9am, which is free, but you will need to register at parkrun.org.uk/Congleton. The Park is open daily, with the closing time dependent on the time of year. For more information see astburymerecountrypark.uk or 01260 297237. Car parking charges apply, no overnight parking allowed. The lake is owned by Stoke-on-Trent Angling Society who rent out space to Peak Pursuits for water sports. If you fancy kayaking, canoeing, or sailing contact Peak Pursuits peak.co.uk/astbury-water-sports-centre or telephone 01782 722226.CONGLETON PADDLING POOLThe town’s Paddling Pool has entertained children throughout the summer months from the 1930s and continues to be a source of summer fun and delight to the younger age group. While many councils have closed their pools, Congleton Town Council has seen it as an important part of the town’s heritage and continued to invest in the site. The pool normally opens on the Saturday before the late May bank holiday until early September. Visitors must book their free spaces in advance via the town council’s online booking system. Opening is weather dependent, session dates and times may vary. All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Parking in the area is restricted so users are advised to park in the town centre car parks. Visit congleton-tc.gov.uk CONGLETON PARKThis impressive Victorian Park, complete with children’s play area, paths through the ancient town woods, river walks, ornamental gardens, bowling green, bandstand, toilets and pavilion café is just a ve-minute walk from the Town Centre! Thanks to a £1.5 million Heritage and Lottery Grant in 2005 the park was lovingly restored to its former glory. The Park is the venue for some great community events – including music concerts on the 100-year-old bandstand, Duck Race and the spectacular Rotary Bonre and reworks display. It has even been the venue for some major concerts – including Girls Aloud! In 2021 the park celebrated its 150th anniversary! The Park is owned by Cheshire East Council, but sta from Congleton Town Council’s Streetscape service ensures the park looks good 365 days of the year! For more ideas of places to visit in and around Congleton and Cheshire, contact Congleton Information Centre on 01260 270350 option 1, visit cheshireeast.gov.uk or scan the QR code. 20EXPLORE CONGLETON

Proudly part of the Congleton community for over 50 yearsSiemens is proud to be a part of Congleton’s story now and for the future. Join us: siemens.co.uk/congletonView our open roles Siemens Congleton is proud to be a key part of the Congleton community. Founded in 1971, we are the oldest Siemens factory in the UK. But that doesn’t mean that we’re old-fashioned. We have the highest productivity rate per square metre of any Siemens site in the UK, which has allowed us to put effort into new product innovation and help us grow the number of customers we work with and support new sectors. The team here designs and manufactures variable speed drives – sometimes called inverters – which are devices that connect to motors to control their speed and make them more efficient. Our team of 500 people working in different departments – from research and development and test engineering, to sales and procurement – help create more than one million electrical devices each year. These devices support customers working in sectors as broad as food manufacturing and aerospace. Because we strive to continuously improve, we work as part of a network of key leading factories from across Siemens that aim to push the boundaries of innovation in manufacturing. We have also taken the lead to put sustainability at the core of everything we do and are a leading example of how to reduce carbon emissions in UK manufacturing. We use local green energy supplied by Dane Valley Community Energy at Havannah Weir on the river Dane and through our on-site renewable energy generation. And, we are educating local children about the importance of minimising energy wastage. Our purpose is “doing what others can’t, for generations to come” and to do so we believe in being embedded in the community. We’re not just based in Congleton, we’re proud to be a part of its story now and for the future.Find out more: siemens.co.uk/congleton

One of the most outstanding characteristics of Congleton is its strong voluntary sector, which plays a vibrant role in every aspect of the cultural, social and sporting life of the town. Over 150 organisations and groups are run by volunteers, making Congleton a very lively, welcoming and active community. A key organisation for Congleton is the Congleton Partnership. The Partnership has brought hundreds of thousands of pounds into the town via grants to deliver projects aimed at improving Congleton for its residents, workers and visitors. Over the years, the Congleton Partnership has brought a volunteer group that actively encourages more people to get involved – with the rm belief that the more people involved the more that can be achieved! Some successes include the recent renovation of the Cenotaph, adding safe cycle routes, mapping country walks, introducing information boards and town entry signs, the River Dane Walkway and Congleton Apple Juice. More information at congletonpartnership.co.uk Congleton has four ‘Connected Community’ Hubs oering a wide range of activities for the community. They are Bromley Farm Community Centre, Ruby’s Fund, The Old Saw Mill in Back River Street and Bromley Farm Wellbeing Hub in Parnell Square. Congleton Community Projects (CCP) provides creative support, advice and practical help to many voluntary groups and organisations. Congleton Town Council provides a grant to the group. CCP created and delivers the very popular annual Food and Drink Festival and is involved with many other festivals. For more information contact jo@congletoncommunityprojects.org or visit congletoncommunityprojects.org Care of young people is a strong strand in community life. Ruby’s Fund is a charity providing social, sensory, educational and recreational services for children, young people, their families and carers at a Sensory Centre in Roe Street. Scouting and Guiding ourishes in Congleton with numerous units throughout the town engaged in oering challenging opportunities and new skills. The Air Training Corps 230 (Congleton Squadron) and the Congleton Army Cadets, both based at Rope Walk are also very active in the Town. Church life and faith groups are very active in Congleton with most of the churches having community rooms which help support their youth groups, luncheon clubs for senior residents and many social events and activities. Both local groups provide excellent networking and friendship groups and are always keen to welcome new members. The town is extremely fortunate to have its own fabulous theatre, run by a trust. There are lots of thespian groups of all ages and disciplines involved in the local Daneside Theatre. The theatre also acts as a cinema for the town showing regular box-oce hits. More details at danesidetheatre.co.ukCongleton’s music scene is thriving, and ranges from talented local indie and rock bands to the fabulous Clonter Opera on the outskirts of Congleton. The Congleton Choral Society congletonchoralsociety.org oers a varied range of choral music, with a number of concerts held during the year. An oshoot of the long-established Choral Society is the Congleton Community Choir, for those who want to sing a more light-hearted varied programme of songs. Congleton Youth Orchestra encourages young musicians from nine to twenty-ve years old. It has a junior string section and trains younger players for the main orchestra. The group is pleased to hear from young musicians and can loan instruments free of charge for a trial period. Brass bands are still strong in the area and two local bands, the Maccleseld Silk Band and the Rode Hall Silver Band often play at the theatre, Town Hall and at local events.Congleton has a growing arts community with both Victoria Mill victoriamillartcentre.org and the Electric Picture House electricpicturehouse.online providing units for a wide range of artists and exhibition space. See Creative Congleton, page 36.There is a wide range of sporting and leisure groups run by volunteers for the benet of their members. See ‘Keeping Active’ page 30.There are several support and friendship groups oering an opportunity for people to meet others in a similar position. These range from parent and toddler groups to the Library’s Crafternoon tea sessions. There are also support groups specialising in helping those with additional needs. Many groups rely on volunteers to help them to function.Supporting the work of many of the voluntary groups and organisations are eight local trusts, see page 74.LOOKING FOR MORE INFORMATION & VOLUNTARY ORGANISATIONS?It is impossible to mention every voluntary organisation in the town and the above are just a few examples to illustrate the vibrancy and massive contribution that such groups make to the quality of life in Congleton. For lots more information about all the Community Groups and Organisations look out for the soon to be updated ‘Congleton’s Get Involved’ Booklet produced by Congleton Community Projects, available at: congletoncommunityprojects.orgCongleton Credit Union has been operating since 1995. It is only open to people who live or work in CW12 and oers members a chance to save on a regular basis and borrow money (up to 3 x what they have saved) at a low-interest rate. Congleton in Bloom has been successfully greening and transforming areas of Congleton since the group was formed in 1998. In addition to helping to create a cleaner, greener Congleton, In Bloom activities have also brought hundreds of people together, of all ages, in either town-wide or local greening projects.Over the past two decades, Congleton has had amazing success in regional and national RHS In Bloom competitions scooping 20 gold medals for its horticultural excellence, community involvement and environmental responsibility. Congleton has represented the North West in the national large town nals in 2001, 2007, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2022, winning four gold medals. Congleton would have been a nalist in 2020 if COVID-19 hadn’t caused the competition to be postponed. In addition to Congleton in Bloom, the town also benets from many ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ campaigns, including Buglawton in Bloom and Bromley Farm in Bloom which have been running almost as long as the town group. Although the town is praised for its oral roundabouts, hanging baskets, troughs and owerbeds, only 40% of the marks are for horticultural excellence. The rest are for environmental responsibility and community engagement. Schools, businesses, youth groups, churches, pubs, care homes and many local neighbourhoods and individuals take part. The group would love to see even more people take part! Look out for monthly town tidies, planting opportunities or talk to the group about setting up your own neighbourhood group and be part of the movement to create more community pride and an even cleaner, greener Congleton. Looking for some peace and quiet and a splash of colour? Sit and listen to the world go by in Congleton’s hidden gardens and green spaces. Connect with nature and give your well-being a boost.ELIZABETH’S GARDEN, WEST ROAD 2018 was the 100 year anniversary of ‘Give Women the Vote’, the garden was transformed with Green, White and Violet owering plants in stripes, as on the Suragettes’ sash. In 2019, the garden was renamed ‘Elizabeth’s Garden’ after Elizabeth Wolstenholme Elmy, Congleton’s own suragist. The sash pattern was retained on one side, with a spiral pattern on the other, incorporating a path. Almost 40 volunteers worked on this garden, including re cadets, reghters, u3a garden group and others. Each summer, children and adults delight in nding butteries and bees itting between the owers.MOODY STREET SENSORY GARDENAn under-used and tired garden space in Moody Street Congleton was transformed into a vibrant, sensory space suitable for people of all ages to relax and enjoy, thanks to an initiative between Congleton Partnership, Ansa, Cheshire East Council and Congleton Town Council. The unloved grey space was recognised as an area in need of improvement in 2010. Thanks to local funding the space has received a complete make-over. Now the garden delights all ve senses, as well as being a tranquil place to sit. CONGLETON BATH HOUSE & PHYSIC GARDEN, COLEHILL BANKThe bath-house is a small brick building, partially hidden by trees and bushes on a roughly triangular plot of land between Lawton street and Colehill Bank. The bath-house and the physic garden are so well hidden that many townspeople have no idea they are there. The gardens are tended by volunteers, planted with edibles and medicinal plants, shrubs and trees.CONGLETON COMMUNITY GARDEN, LAWTON STREET These gardens in the heart of Congleton, were created by volunteers over 25 years ago from a wasteland left after the local cinema was pulled down. There is a fragrant rose garden, shady woodland areas, herbaceous borders and a Garden of Reection lled with white owering plants. For the last few years, a group of community gardeners have been the caretakers of this calm green oasis. MARGARET’S PLACE (ANTROBUS STREET GARDENS) Following a complete makeover, managed by local partners, the area is very popular with visitors as a place to sit and relax and provides improved access to Readesmoor Medical Centre from the public car park. The garden has a health theme which includes two pieces of outdoor gym equipment and edible plants (fruit trees and bushes) planted amongst the ornamentals. An apple core sculpture/resting seat and a wooden arch carved from oak with fruit carvings are features of the garden. The apex of the arch mirrors that of the church roof behind it. 48POCKET GARDENS

50PLAY PARKSCongleton has 15 play parks in and around the town as well as some great open spaces. The play parks oer a range of equipment to cater for toddlers to teens. Some of the parks have obstacle courses, zip wires, cycle paths, and playing elds equipped with netball and basketball posts and football goal frames. All of the parks have benched seating areas for the adults, or children when they eventually get tired! Residents and visitors can benet from these free play areas by getting active and socialising at the same time. The largest parks with the most play equipment can be found at Congleton Park, Quinta Park, Lower Heath and St John’s. A new inclusive wheelchair roundabout was added to Congleton Park in 2023. With almost daily news reports about the devastating eects of climate change and the deadly impact that our lifestyle is having on nature, it is essential that we all start doing more to limit our personal impact on the natural world. In September 2019 Congleton Town Council signed a Climate Change Emergency pledge with the aim of making its own activities carbon neutral by 2025. An ambitious target! But environmental issues are not the remit of one group, organisation, business or country. It is something that we all have to be conscious of as part of our everyday lives and there are lots of actions that people can take that can help make a dierence to both reduce their environmental impact and give a boost to nature. CONGLETON CLIMATE ACTION GROUP This is an active local Friends of the Earth campaigning group determined to carry out positive actions to improve the environment in Congleton and surrounding areas and to call out inappropriate actions by councils, businesses and organisations. Congleton Sustainable Travel is a group within Climate Action that focuses on improving local conditions from use of pavements, cycles and public transport. Both groups always welcome new members - CW12climateaction@gmail.com CONGLETON APPLE JUICECongleton residents have been donating their excess apples to the Sustainability Group since 2009. This is turned into delicious Congleton Apple Juice, Cider and Cider Vinegar. Donate apples at the Old Saw Mill or Astbury Mere Visitor’s Centre from August to October. Buy the produce all year around while stocks last!CONGLETON FOOD4FREEAn independent group which is part of the Congleton Sustainability Group, working to encourage, inspire and educate residents to think about how food can be grown communally and attractively, and how they could also grow more of their own food in their own plots.CONGLETON REPAIR CAFÉAims to reduce waste by helping people to repair rather than bin goods! Get more use out of your items and learn DIY skills at the same time! The Café meets on the last Saturday of the month at the Old Saw Mill in Back River Street.DANE VALLEY COMMUNITY ENERGY LTDWas set up as a Community Benet Society to develop sustainable energy from the weir on the River Dane in Havannah. The rst weir is successfully creating power and beneting the community with the prot from the electric created. Work on a second weir and lots of solar panel projects are being developed. TREES FOR CONGLETONCongleton set an ambitious target in 2019 to plant 30,000 trees by the end of 2024. The group have exceeded the half way mark and are on track for completion by 2024. The group is always grateful for oers of more land to access and volunteers to help with planting. treesforcongleton@gmail.comA GREENER CONGLETONGREEN GROUPS & RESOURCES REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLECheshire East is a relatively wealthy borough that consumes more than the national average and creates more waste. Congleton has a reputation for being a friendly town. We hope you nd that to be true. There are many groups and organisations across the town which provide help, support, or a chance to interact with others.A good place to start is the soon-to-be updated ‘Get Involved’ book produced by Congleton Community Projects. It gives the contacts and more information on around 100 organisations in Congleton. You can pick up a copy at the Congleton Information Centre or download at congletoncommunityprojects.org. Below are just some of the areas that we are passionate about.CONGLETON CARES ABOUT YOUR SAFETY…Feeling safe in your own home and neighbourhood is important. Congleton has its own policing unit made up of Cheshire Police Constables and Police Community Support Ocers as well as a Sergeant. The local unit is based at the Police Station in Congleton. The Police hold regular surgeries in the community for the public to come and have a chat. It is the work with residents that enables the police to identify, target and prosecute individuals who commit crime. You can report crime via 101 online, 101 telephone call or Crime Stoppers Anonymous online or 0800 555 111.Congleton Town Council pays for the main CCTV cameras around the town to be monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from the control room in Maccleseld. Pictures from the cameras can be sent straight to the tablets of police in the area. Local Street Pastors can often be seen out on Friday and Saturday nights checking that everyone is ok and oering help to those who may need it. Within your neighbourhood there may already be a Neighbourhood Watch group - you can check on ourwatch.org.uk. If there isn’t one, why not set one up? Congleton Town Council will help you. Through the Community Safety Charter, you can learn basic techniques to help each other stay safe. CONGLETON CARES ABOUT STOPPING ABUSE AND VIOLENCEIn September 2020 Congleton Town Council was awarded White Ribbon Status for the work it is doing within the community to stop violence. Faith groups play an important role in Congleton. They provide support and help to the community in many ways. They provide a Street Pastor service on a Friday night in the Town Centre and New Life Church manages the Storehouse Food Bank for the town. The faith groups are also the custodians to some of the most iconic and important historical buildings in Congleton. St Peter’s Church in the town centre is a Grade 1 listed building. Completed in 1786, it is a ne example of a Georgian building and interior. St Mary’s RC Church is an early example of a ‘new’ Roman Catholic Church built after the reformation. HOW YOUR COUNCILS SERVE YOUYou are served by two tiers of Local Government. Cheshire East is known as the principal authority, also known as a Unitary Council, and is the council where most of the power and budget is vested. Cheshire East Council is responsible for overseeing or delivering local services such as highways, waste, council tax, planning, licensing and housing needs. It is responsible for an area measuring 116,638 hectares housing more than 360,700 people. See Useful numbers for contacting Cheshire East Council. The town council focuses its energy on making Congleton a great place to live, work and visit and so improving the lives of residents. The town council owns the Town Hall, which it uses as its oces as well as a great space to hire. It has a long-term lease on the Paddling Pool, Community Garden, Hillary Avenue Allotments and the Cenotaph site. The Town Council runs the Streetscape Services to keep the town clean, empties the public bins and provides street cleaning and ground maintenance services. It comments on Congleton-related planning and licensing applications, organises events, promotes the town, pays for the CCTV monitoring, runs campaigns and issues grants. The council is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2025 and is working hard to increase biodiversity across Congleton.Since April 2021 the town council has been responsible for the Congleton Information Centre. It is also the responsible body for the Congleton Partnership, a major sponsor of Congleton Community Projects and a contributor to the local Citizens Advice Service.Looking for further information or support:congleton-tc.gov.uk | 01260 270350 | info@congleton-tc.gov.ukwww.cheshireeast.gov.uk | 0300 123 550071YOUR CONGLETON PROPERTY EXPERTS BOOK A FREE VALUATION WITH CHRIS OR PETE01260 543 999 | www.chrishamriding.co.uk

One in four adults are believed to experience a mental health condition each year, making it very likely that everyone will know someone who would benet from help with their mental health. Like physical illness, mental illness can aect anyone. And just like with a physical illness it is important that you seek support.Your local doctors’ surgery is usually the best place to start. They will be able to provide you dierent options of support which may include talking therapies, and/or medication. Maintaining good mental health is invaluable to having a feeling of overall wellbeing. If you suspect a friend, work colleague or family member is suering, one way you can support them is simply by listening, not interrupting, just letting them talk and respond in a non-judgemental way. Repeating back what someone says to you can also encourage them to keep talking because they will know that you’re genuinely interested in what they have to say.LOCAL SUPPORTThe following local groups and organisations can oer help with your well-being.BUDDY AND BEFRIENDING FOR OVER 50’SGet matched to a volunteer buddy or befriender for companionship and social chats over the phone.01260 606066 or email:befriending@changing-lives-together.org.ukCROSSROADS TOGETHER (CHESHIRE EAST)Supports unpaid carers of all ages and the people they care for.
