Parish Council news Holmes Chapel Parish Council competitions Garden Competition first prize went to Mr and Mrs Denham of Coniston Drive Holmes Chapel The Senior 1st Prize went to Mrs Mcfarquhar of Picton Square Holmes Chapel Design a Skateboard Competition This was won by Noah Hankey age 9 from Holmes Chapel Noah won a skateboard deck which was printed with his winning design All entrants also won a 5 voucher to use in the community centre cafe a beautiful shot of the St Lukes Church by night The junior prize was won by Miss Natasha Mitchell age 13 They will receive the prizes on the 9th November at the Council meeting We offer our congratulations to the winners and appreciative thanks to all those who entered the various competitions We look forward to receiving your entries next year Photography Competition We are pleased to announce the winner of the adult competition is Mr N Taylor with 8 Winning Photo Mr N Taylor

Garden for Nell 22 victims tragically lost their lives in the Manchester Arena attack in May this year one of the victims was Nell Jones 14 who attended Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School In the weeks which followed the attack a temporary memorial site was put in place at the school where hundreds of students and teachers from the school as well as the local community placed flowers as a sign of respect and remembrance In the search for a more permanent tribute to Nell and the other victims the school decided to create a memorial garden to provide a place where memories of Nell can be reminisced upon The garden will be open to the whole community and can be used for anyone who has suffered a loss A friend of Nell wishes for people to go there not just to remember Nell but someone they have personally lost The structure of the garden is split up into three sections all with different purposes The first section is the Contemplation Garden which can be used as a quiet place for reflection It will include benches and multiple types of flowers which provide a relaxing environment The second section of the garden is the Japanese Garden which will feature personalised messages from those who wish to make a lasting tribute for Nell The third section is the Sensory Garden which is designed to stimulate senses and evolve memories It will also support the school s SEN students and the village s dementia friendly campaign Any young people in Holmes Chapel and the surrounding areas who have been affected by any bereavements or other difficult issues in their life can contact local organisation Visyon They offer support services including one to one counselling support groups mentoring and many more helpful activities to help younger people in the community express themselves in relation to any issues they may be facing Visyon also offer support to parents and families of children who are having to deal with difficult circumstances through the use of parent support groups Anyone wishing to contact Visyon can do by calling 01260 290000 or visit their website at www visyon org uk Written and researched by Matt Willis Sarah Hartas Holmes Chapel 6th Form Contemplation Japanese Sensory 11

Let s talk legal Warning for cohabiting couples The number of couples living together rather than getting married has almost doubled over the last 20 years according to the Office of National Statistics there were 3 3 million cohabiting couples in 2016 compared to 1 8 million in 1996 It is also a sad fact that the proportion of cohabiting relationships that fail is far higher than the proportion of marriages that fail Despite this there remains a lot of ignorance about the legal status of cohabitees There has never been any such thing as Common Law Marriage irrespective of how long a couple have lived together or whether they have had children together What this means is that if a couple who have lived together separate there is no ability at all to claim maintenance or to claim against any asset other than the house There is the ability to claim a share in the house but this is by no means automatic and a claim would have to rely on complicated trusts law It is therefore vital for couples considering setting up home together or who are already living together to enter into a Cohabitation Agreement This is a legally binding contract which will set out the division of assets including the house and financial support in the event that the relationship breaks down These agreements are not expensive and provide the couple with certainty and security Holmes Chapel legal experts Louise from Evolve Family Law 17

Grandma s kitchen Now the nights are drawing in and it is getting colder there is nothing more heart warming than a bowl of home made soup Even better is an easy to make recipe that takes only a few minutes to prepare and is ready to serve in just over half an hour Method Brown the pancetta in a heavy bottomed saucepan and add the chopped onion until softened add a little ground black pepper and then add the cubed potato Cook over a medium heat for a minute and add the vegetable stock Bring to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes Next add the frozen peas Bring back to the boil and simmer for a further 3 4 minutes Take off the heat and allow to cool for a minute Easy Peasy Pea Pancetta Soup Serves 4 85g smoked pa 1 medium pota ncetta cubes to cut into sm all cubes with the skin on 1 large onion finely choppe d 1ltr vegetable stock 500g frozen pe as salt and black pepper to seas on 100ml low fat yoghurt or sing le cream sprig of mint fo r garnish Process the soup with a hand blender or in a food processor until nearly smooth Be very careful when blending as the soup is extremely hot Season to taste and then transfer to the serving bowls add a swirl of yoghurt or cream finally garnish with a sprig of mint Serve hot with some warm crusty bread 31

Our local heritage This is the first of a regular feature which will delve into the characters and buildings of our village and surrounding area Who knows Holmes Chapel was the birth place of a world famous golfer experienced its own Great Fire in 1753 and saw significant change with the coming of the railways Future articles will provide the answers As this first article is being published in mid November just after Remembrance Sunday we have recalled one of the men lost during the Great War David Elks was a wallpaper printer at the Holmes Chapel Wallpaper Works which was on the same site as Fads on Macclesfield Road He joined the forces in 1917 and after that time was involved in the battles of France and Flanders We know in October 1918 he was in hospital suffering from gas poisoning Sadly he returned to service immediately afterwards and was killed in action on 1 November 1918 He moved to Holmes Chapel in 1911 to join the work force at the new wall paper works having been in the same trade in Pendleton near Manchester He left behind a wife Edith and two young children who were living at Church View David Elkes was only one of 225 men who were serving in the forces during the First World War with connections to Holmes Chapel of those a total of 31 died during the conflict Holmes Chapel U3A Local History group 35

Safer motoring Large numbers of cars fail their MOT each year due to the condition of their tyres They fail because of perished and cracked sidewalls cuts slow punctures and bulges They also fail because they are simply worn out The condition of your car tyres is vital to yours and others safety on the road It is extremely important that regular checks are made on their condition and state of wear This is important throughout the year but especially so during the oncoming winter months New tyres will have a tread depth of 7mm and the minimum legal depth is 1 7 mm Most tyres have tread wear indicators which are usually a coloured raised bar at the bottom of the tyre grooves When the tread reaches these bars the legal limit has been reached Uneven tyre wear can make reliance on these indicators unreliable so it is a good idea to carry out your own checks So we should get in the habit of these weekly checks and look at Tyre pressures Check handbook for these or find details inside a car door or the fuel filler cap The internet is also a resource Treat yourself to a modern tyre pressure gauge Check tread depths Minimum 1 6 mm across the entire tread pattern Look for sidewall damage cracks splits bulges or blisters It can be difficult to check the inner sidewalls but it is just as important as the outer Do not forget the spare if you have one Season s Greetings from the Holmes Chapel Motoring Expert The easiest way to check the tread depth is to use a 20 pence coin the outer edge of which is 1 6 mm thick Running the coin down the treads will give a good basic idea as the legality of the tread depth Notwithstanding the above most tyre trade and motoring organisations recommend that tyres are replaced at 3mm tread depth Michelin for one manufacturer claim that their tyres are designed to provide as new performance down to the 1 6 mm limit Whilst I will not argue with Michelin I will state that a tyre near to the legal limit will surely not disperse water from its treads as efficiently as one with 3mm of tread 41

PCSO report I am your local officer for Holmes Chapel PCSO Chesters I have now completed my training and have enjoyed getting to know the residents businesses and people of Holmes Chapel In the first few weeks of my independency I have been focusing on the schools in the area to meet the younger residents and to ensure they know who I am and what I can help with I have already had a lot of interaction with Holmes Chapel Comprehensive and it was great to hear what the students wanted in the area to keep them busy I am in the very early stages of creating a project which is aiming to engage the younger community watch this space I was also involved in Operation Captured between the 10th and 12th October 2017 which was targeted at the contravention of weight restrictions parking and our Fatal 4 offences Speeding Mobile Phones Seatbelts and Drink Drug Driving The results of which were as follows Total number of Traffic Offence Reports issued calculated at 91 TRUCAM caught 171 drivers speeding 29 in Holmes Chapel 5 tickets issued to HGV drivers for weight restriction offences 3 tickets for non endorseable parking obstruction offences This was a huge success and we are pleased to have stopped and dealt with the above offences Unfortunately we are seeing certain issues regarding Anti Social Behaviour in the area however whilst working with the PCSO s from Knutsford LPU I feel as though we are managing to contain the issues that are being reported I am committed in keeping Holmes Chapel a safe friendly and vibrant community to live in If you need to contact me please ring 101 leave a message with the control room OR send an email to liz chesters cheshire pnn police uk 47
